Bustin’ Bias – Inspiring Conversations for Change
Did you learn that it’s better to avoid discussions about religion, politics, or sex – especially at dinner parties?
So many of us did!
Given nationwide ethnic tensions, there’s a growing realization that even better is learning how to discuss these subjects with genuine curiosity, appreciative inquiry, generous listening, and compassionate reflection.
The first Impact 100 Redwood Circle group exploring bias and discrimination was so enthusiastically received that a subcommittee formed and continues to offer six-week, 90 minute weekly sessions once or twice per year.
Adopting a “beginner’s mind” with prompts from books and videos, concepts often fraught with self-consciousness or fear of criticism become inspiring sparks for free, respectful expression. Please expect at least an hour of reading/prep before each meeting.
Feedback showed that the experience was emotionally and intellectually liberating, personally inspiring, and deeply rewarding. Everyone could understand and better appreciate the urgency of demands for change and sharpened thinking regarding the role of community philanthropy.
Exploring disparity, stereotypes, the shift from equality to equity, and the consequences of implicit bias can refresh our views with a new lens on civil rights. Ideally, we move from observers to participants in assuring more just and peaceful communities for everyone.
